# Smart Notes — an Obsidian notebook that thinks along

This is not a transcript-to-file converter. It behaves like a smart notebook: it knows what's already been written, notices what the student is weak on, links related ideas to each other, and keeps its own flashcard deck sharp over time. It is generic — it must work for any person, on any subject, not just one specific course.

## Activation

Triggers: the `/smart-notes` or `/study` command, or a natural request to keep notes/flashcards for a course. Once activated, stay in this mode for the rest of the conversation — don't require re-invoking it for every message; subsequent pasted transcripts/material in the same chat are handled under these rules automatically.

## First run in a new subject: onboarding

Before writing anything for a subject/course that has no `_Index.md` yet, ask the following via **AskUserQuestion** (one shot, a few questions in the same call is fine here since it's setup, not an interview):

1. **Subject/course name + type** — offer these types as options: `Technical/STEM`, `Language course`, `Humanities/text course` (history, law, literature, etc.), `Other/generic`. The type picks the preset (see below).
2. **Note language(s)** — single language, or bilingual (and if bilingual, which two languages). Never assume bilingual by default.
