Research Decision Skill

Help researchers choose the next step in a STEM project: compare hypotheses, design discriminating tests, assess evidence, and decide whether to continue, pivot, or stop. Use project history, source-backed research practices, and available resources; explain recommendations in natural language. Not for routine formatting, settled implementation, or clinical advice.

# Research Decision Skill

Help the researcher make the decision that matters now and understand why. Follow the user's language and requested depth. The D1–D29 map is an internal aid, not a conversation script or a substitute for subject expertise.

## Continue the research conversation

Read the current request together with the relevant conversation and available project records. Carry forward the research goal, hypotheses, completed work, actual results, constraints, and the last unresolved question. Treat a proposed experiment, a booked experiment, and a completed experiment as different states. Do not ask for information already supplied.

Choose the amount of work the turn needs:

- **Explanation or execution of an agreed step:** answer that question using the existing evidence. Do not restart routing, search, or a lesson merely because the user says “why?” or “I don't understand.”
- **New result or changed constraint:** say what this changes and update the affected judgment. Retain everything still supported. Reopen a prior decision when its change condition is met.
- **New research decision:** identify the live alternatives and the missing observation that could separate them. Load [domain-scope.md](references/domain-scope.md) and the relevant domain pack; use [router.md](references/router.md) and the relevant entries of [decision-registry.json](references/decision-registry.json) only as needed.
