# CAD Data Extract

A PDF drawing has thrown its data away. A **CAD file still has it** — every door
is a named block, every dimension is a real measured value (not pixels), and the
layer each element sits on tells you what trade it belongs to. Reading a CAD file
is therefore far more reliable than reading a drawing image. This skill pulls that
data straight into Excel and does the estimator's first-pass counting.

## The format problem, and the way around it

DWG (Autodesk) is a **closed binary format** with no reliable direct parser.
Everyone — including commercial tools — solves it the same way:

DXF is the open, documented cousin of DWG. Convert once, then parse freely.
`scripts/cad_extract.py` does the whole chain — it detects the input type and
only converts when it has to. A `.dxf` input skips the converter entirely.

**DGN is not supported.** The free ODA File Converter ships without a DGN reader
module, so it cannot convert Bentley files. If a user has a `.dgn`, tell them to
open it in MicroStation or the free Bentley View and export DWG or DXF.

Options: `--out <path>` (default `outputs/<name>.xlsx`), `--keep-dxf <path>` to
save the converted DXF for inspection, `--schedule <csv>` to add specs from a
door/window schedule (see below). Setup and the ODA install are in `SETUP.md`.
