Claude Code Terminal Pro

Upgrade your Claude Code terminal with a rich, informative status line

What is this?

By default, Claude Code's terminal shows a minimal prompt. This project replaces it with a Gruvbox Dark-themed status line that gives you real-time visibility into:

- Model name — which model is currently active (Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, etc.)
- Context usage progress bar — 20-segment visual bar showing how much context window is consumed
- Token count — exact tokens used vs total context window (e.g. 98k/200k)
- Working directory — current project folder at a glance
- Git branch — active branch name, shown automatically when inside a git repo

All of this rendered in a clean Gruvbox Dark color palette.

Quick Setup

Prerequisites

- Claude Code installed and working
- jq installed (brew install jq on macOS, apt install jq on Linux)
- bc installed (pre-installed on most systems)

Step 1: Copy the status line script

Or download it directly:

Step 2: Update your Claude Code settings

Open your Claude Code settings file at ~/.claude/settings.json and add the statusLine configuration:
Note: If you already have a settings.json with other configurations, just merge the statusLine block into your existing file.

Step 3: Restart Claude Code

Close and reopen Claude Code. Your new status line will appear at the bottom of the terminal.

How status lines work

  • A status line is a command Claude Code runs to draw the bar under the prompt. It gets the session as JSON on stdin (model, folder, cost, context) and prints one or more lines.
  • Point the statusLine setting in ~/.claude/settings.json at it: { "statusLine": { "type": "command", "command": "<the command from the README>" } }.
  • Or run /statusline inside Claude Code and describe what you want.
