Claude Code Statusline

A feature-rich, single-file Node.js statusline for Claude Code.
One line at the bottom of your terminal that tells you everything you actually need:
which model you're on, the live git state of your repo, how much context you've
burned, your prompt-cache hit/write state, and your subscription rate limits.

No dependencies. No build step. Works on macOS, Linux, and Windows.

Preview

Each segment is color-coded (dim, bright, cyan, pink, green, yellow, orange, red) so the
shape of the line itself communicates urgency at a glance. Labels are aggressively
shortened so the line fits your terminal: the width budget is read from the COLUMNS
environment variable that Claude Code exports to the script (v2.1.153+), with a fixed
100-column fallback for older builds and manual runs.

What you see, left to right

The context bar and rate-limit percentages share the same color scale:

| /,
when the copy is missing or differs. If the statusLine key in
~/.claude/settings.json doesn't run that copy yet, it shows a one-time
reminder to run setup and leaves a setup-hint-shown marker file in the same
folder. It writes nothing outside that folder.
- /statusline-for-claude-code:setup (scripts/configure-statusline.js): reads
~/.claude/settings.json and, after your confirmation, rewrites its
statusLine key and saves the previous file as settings.json.bak.
- The status line itself (statusline.js): reads the JSON Claude Code passes
on stdin; runs local, read-only git commands (status, branch,
  rev-parse, rev-list) in the working directory with a 1 s timeout; on
Claude Code builds older than 2.1.251 reads the last 16 KB of the session
transcript for the prompt-cache timer; writes claude-ctx-.json
  to the system temp folder.
- No network. Nothing is…

How status lines work

  • A status line is a command Claude Code runs to draw the bar under the prompt. It gets the session as JSON on stdin (model, folder, cost, context) and prints one or more lines.
  • Point the statusLine setting in ~/.claude/settings.json at it: { "statusLine": { "type": "command", "command": "<the command from the README>" } }.
  • Or run /statusline inside Claude Code and describe what you want.
